AAPI Platform for Change National Call

Asian Americans for Obama, South Asians for Obama and APA for Progress wil hold a national conference call this Sunday focusing on Asian American, South Asian and Pacific Islander issues as part of Barack Obama’s “Listening to America: the Democratic Platform for Change” initiative.

The call takes place on Sunday, July 20, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Pacific Time. The number for the call will be provided to individuals that register online at http://platform.apaforobama.com. We’re also inviting feedback from those who cannot make the call.

This will be an opportunity to share with Sen. Barack Obama and the Democratic Party our suggestions on specific AAPI/South Asian positions, recommendations and policies that should be addressed by the Democratic Party platform.

Kicking off the call will be Obama AAPI Vote Director Charmaine Manansala, Obama AAPI Vote Deputy Director Betsy Kim, Asian Americans for Obama founder Ramey Ko, South Asians for Obama leader and Calif. CD8 team coordinator Anhoni Patel, APA for Progress board member Curtis Chin and AAPI Leadership Council member Cate Park.

Also helping us kick off the call will be Irene Bueno, Sen. Clinton’s presidential campaign AAPI Director, and Michael Yaki, National Platform Director.

Yaki, National Platform Director, is the top staff person on the Platform Committee, working with committee chair Gov. Janet Napolitano and Karen Kornbluh, Principal Author of the Platform.

With almost 700 Platform for Change events going on throughout the country, it’s a privilege that Michael will be able to join us, even for a short while.

A lawyer in private practice, Michael is a U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner, a former senior aide to Speaker Pelosi and served as a member of the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco, representing my district in the city.

The results of our platform call will be incorporated into the formal process that culminates in the adoption of the platform at the Democratic Convention in August. A few participants from among the hundreds of calls taking place throughout the country may even be invited to appear and testify at the National Hearing and at the Convention!
