This Week with AAPIs for Obama

A flurry of activity in August by AAPIs and South Asians for Obama, including events and meetings at the Democratic National Convention, Aug. 25-28, in Denver.

An AAPI Summit with Congressman Mike Honda and the Obama AAPI Vote team takes place on Sunday, Aug. 24, and the Party’s national APIA Caucus convenes on Monday, Aug. 25.  These events and numerous others, including meetings of the convention committees are open to the public.  You don’t have to be a delegate to attend.

Back home in the Bay Area, Filipinos for Obama will hold a kick-off event on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Zebulon, 83 Natoma, San Francisco.

The event host committee includes Hydra Mendoza, Dexter Ligot-Gordon, Angelica Jongco, Rafael “Ace” Climaco, Alyson Megur, April Joy Damian, Fred Cabasa, Genevieve Jopanda, Virg Cristobal, Eric Casher and Stephanie Ong Stillman.

The event is free, but a donation of $25 or more to the Obama campaign enters you in a raffle to win a signed copy of Senator Obama’s book “The Audacity of Hope.”  Visit www.FilipinosforObama.org for more information and to RSVP.

On the other coast, South Asians for Obama will hold a benefit for the Senator and the Obama Victory Fund with Kal Penn, Mira Nair, Karsh Kale, DJ Rekha, Trendroid, Bollygirl v. Dimm, DJ Nihal and others on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m., in the Hiro Ballroom & Lounge at the Maritime Hotel, 363 W. 16th St., New York City.

Tickets start at $100 and will sell out for this event.  Visit www.safo2008.com for more information and to RSVP.

Two new YouTube videos are now available on www.asianamericansforobama.com.  The first is of Sen. Obama’s remarks at the AAPI and South Asian fundraiser held on July 29 in Washington, D.C.  The second is a message from Sen. Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, to the Chinese American community.  It’s the first in a series of videos addressing specific AAPI communities.
