Kyle Chock Tapped for Hawai’i Land Agency
The Associated Press reported today that Hawai’i Gov. Linda Lingle nominated my friend Kyle Chock to the powerful state Land Use Commission.
Kyle will complete the existing term of a member who recently resigned, so his term will end on June 30, 2010. Since he was appointed during a legislative recess, I think his appointment may not require Senate confirmation.
Kyle is the director of The Pacific Resource Partnership, which provides programs that support unionized contractors. He previously served as a group sales account executive for insurance provider AIG Hawai‘i; executive assistant to the chancellor of Honolulu Community College; senior account executive for Stryker Weiner & Yokota Public Relations; and senior advisor and legislative assistant to former Councilmember Jon Yoshimura. He serves on the boards of Lanakila Rehabilitation Foundation, Child & Family Service and Housing Hawai‘i, and is involved with The Nature Conservancy Corporate Council for the Environment. He is a graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, where he earned a master of public administration and a bachelor of education.
Says the commission website: “In 1961, the Hawaii State Legislature determined that a lack of adequate controls had caused the development of Hawaii’s limited and valuable land for short-term gain for the few while resulting in long-term loss to the income and growth potential of our State’s economy. Development of scattered subdivisions, creating problems of expensive yet reduced public services, and the conversion of prime agricultural land to residential use, were key reasons for establishing the state-wide zoning system. To administer this state-wide zoning law, the Legislature established the Land Use Commission. The Commission is responsible for preserving and protecting Hawaii’s lands and encouraging those uses to which lands are best suited.”
I’ve known Kyle for almost 10 years, first meeting during his bid for the state House. He’s an incredible guy, and the commission will certainly benefit from his experience, talent and youth.
