Former UH-Manoa Student Government Leaders to Reunite at Centennial Event
The ongoing commemoration of University of Hawaii’s centennial will next month include a reunion of former student body presidents, officers and student senators from as far back as 1947.
The Jan. 9 reunion, hosted by UH president David McClain and UH-Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, will welcome alumni from past years elected to the student Senate of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. ASUH-Manoa is the campus organization that represents undergraduate students by advocating policies, lobbying government entities on behalf of student interests, providing campus programming and funding student-run campus activities.
Expected attendees include event co-hosts State Supreme Court Justice Simeon Acoba, Jr., UH Regent Michael Dahilig, Dr. Richard Kosaki, UH-West Oahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni, state Rep. Sylvia Luke, state Rep. Scott Saiki, state Rep. Mark Takai and current student body president Christina Stidman.
Kosaki served as student body president from 1947-48 and eventually became UH-Manoa chancellor.
The event was organized in part to recognize that many students at UH-Manoa received an equally valuable education outside of academics. “ASUH gave us the opportunity, outside of our classrooms, to participate in real world events and make contemporary history meaningful for our student body and for the state community,” said Justice Acoba, who served as student body vice president from 1964-65.
“For many of these alumni, their leadership on campus translated into leadership in the community - not just in politics, but in business, nonprofits and other areas” said President McClain. “The opportunity for students to develop leadership is an important part of the university’s mission.”
Other event co-hosts include: Emeritus VP for Student Affairs Dr. Doris Ching, Mitchell A. Imanaka, Dan Ishii, Paul Isono, Keith Kamisugi, John T. Komeiji, Michael Miller, Capsun Poe and Carl Takamura.
